Des Moines hopes for big fan turnout for U.S.A. Track and Field Championships

June 17, 2013 By Todd Kimm

Des Moines is set to host the U.S.A. Track and Field Championships this week and will need a good showing if it hopes to attract the biggest event of all. The City has been vying to land the U.S. Olympic Trials in the future and those hopes may hinge on how fans respond to the National Championships.

Greg Edwards, president of the Des Moines Convention and Visitors Bureau, says they’ve been really urging people to come out and fill up the stadium as they need to show a full stadium when the event is on TV, especially Sunday afternoon.

Edwards says months of work go into hosting an event of this magnitude. He says there are a lot of volunteers who help with the events at the Des Moines Area Sports Commission, and he says the community as a whole chips in.

Edwards says they have worked hard to get local companies involved to buy large blocks of tickets that they are getting out to employees and groups. Edwards says there are still tickets available for anyone who wants to attend the meet.

The U.S. Championships begin on Wednesday.
