One dead in Independence fire

June 28, 2013 By Matt Kelley

One person was killed in an apartment fire early this morning in northeast Iowa. It happened in Independence, where Doug Cook is the fire chief. “We got the call this morning at 4:16 and we were on the scene by 4:19,” Cook said.

Flames were coming through the roof of the two-story building when firefighters arrived. The fire was brought under control within an hour and one victim was found inside.

The Waterloo-Cedar Falls Courier reports the victim is a 7-year-old girl, but Cook would not confirm that information. “There are people reporting all kinds of stuff who don’t have a real clear idea,” Cook told Radio Iowa this afternoon.

Cook also would not say how many people were in the home and it’s unclear what sparked the fire. “That’s under investigation,” Cook said. The State Fire Marshal’s office is investigating the fire.
