Multiple shots were being fired from a bridge in southwest Iowa late last  night, prompting law officers from several agencies to converge and a standoff ensued. Cass County Sheriff Darby McLaren says the gunfire started shortly before 11 P.M. northeast of the town of Grant.

Sheriff McLaren says the man was making threats to his own life while firing shots from the bridge, about 5 miles east of Highway 71 on Yankton Road. Responding agencies included the Adair, Adams and Montgomery County sheriff’s offices, the Iowa State Patrol, and a helicopter.

The man surrendered shortly after midnight and was taken into custody. He was transported to the Cass County Memorial Hospital in Atlantic for evaluation. McLaren says alcohol may have played a role in the incident. No charges are filed.
