Speed, alcohol and a medical condition are being considered as causes of a fiery crash involving a semi tractor trailer Sunday afternoon along Interstate 29, in western Iowa’s Pottawattamie County. The I-29 bridge at Avenue G in Council Bluffs was closed for a little more than 5-hours Sunday, after a northbound semi crashed through a guardrail separating north and southbound traffic.

The rig continued across Avenue G and hit an embankment before spilling fuel from its tanks and bursting into flames. The body of the male driver and only occupant of the cab, was discovered after the flames were extinguished.

Officials believe they know who the victim is, but his name was being withheld, pendling completion of an autopsy slated for today (Monday), and notification of family. Anyone who witnessed the crash is asked to call the Council Bluffs P-D’s Traffic Unit at 712-328-4948.
