Board of Education votes down attempt to tighten up school start date rules

August 1, 2013 By Dar Danielson

The State Board of Education voted 5-2 today against moving forward with a change in rules that would have made it tougher for schools to get a state waiver to start school in August. Representatives of the state tourism industry and Iowa State Fair spoke in favor of the rule change today during the board’s meeting.

Local school board members, education organizations  and some parents spoke out against the issue. If the board had approved the rule change today, it would have moved forward to a public hearing on September 10th.
