The first round is complete at the state high school baseball tournament and there will be a new champion in class 4A. Clinton jumped out to an early 8-0 lead then held off a furious rally by top ranked and defending champion Ankeny 10-8.

Chino Alcala’s two out single in the bottom of the ninth inning brought in the winning run as third ranked Des Moines East beat Davenport North 7-6. “I was looking for an away curveball and he threw me a fastball and I just got out on it and hit it opposite field,” Alcala explains.

Davenport North tried to take the lead twice by attempting a double steal but both times had runner thrown out at the plate. Wildcats coach Cory Wachal says they had opportunities, but East made the plays they needed.

Dom Thompson-Williams drove in the lone run of the game and the Sioux City East Black Raiders scraped out a 1-0 victory over the 10th-ranked Cedar Rapids Xavier.
