Funeral held for Iowa war hero in Florida

August 2, 2013 By Radio Iowa Contributor

An Iowa-born war hero was laid to rest Thursday. A funeral for Colonel George “Bud” Day was held in Florida.

Day was born in Sioux City and grew up in the Riverside area of town. Day earned over 70 medals during service in World War Two, Korea and Vietnam. Here in Iowa, flags were flown at half-staff to honor the 88-year-old war hero who was awarded the Medal of Honor after surviving over five years in a North Vietnamese prison camp.

An Iowa memorial service will be held at the Iowa Air National Guard’s 185th Air Refueling Wing in Sioux City on Saturday at 10 a.m.
