Five people were transported to a hospital following a house fire early this morning in southeast Iowa. Muscatine Fire Battalion Chief Brian Abbott says the initial call indicated the fire was active and people might be trapped inside.

The call was placed at 12:37 a.m. “When they arrived, the people had extracted themselves. When the (call) first came in, it was said people were still in the house, but when (firefighters) got on scene, they had gotten out,” Abbott said.

The fire was brought under control within a couple hours. All five people inside the home escaped, but one of the adults may have serious injuries. “I think there were some inhalation injuries. Five people were transported to the hospital,” Abbott said.

Two adults and three children were in the home. Abbott said one of the adults was taken by AirCare to University of Iowa Hospitals. The other four were transported there by ambulance. The cause of the fire, at 112 Roscoe Avenue in Muscatine, remains under investigation.
