Grinnell diver captures two gold at national championships

August 19, 2013 By Radio Iowa Contributor

Grinnell native Deidre Freeman capture two gold medals at the AT&T National Diving Championships in Iowa City. Freeman was part of a winning three meter synchronized diving team and also captured the individual three meter springboard title after finishing a disappointing 10th in the preliminary round.

“I knew that I had the capability of being on top, but I don’t know if it was just that I was diving early in the morning…I just wasn’t really feeling it in the morning and just decided that I was going to go after everything and ended up diving really well,” Freeman says.

Freeman says she may have more opportunities in synchronized competitions down the road now that a top U.S.A diving official has seen what she is capable of, and told her that she is one of the top divers. He is planning a competition to match up the top divers and see who wins.

Freeman was asked is she has a preference between the individual and synchronized competitions. She says she’s equally skilled right now because she knows how to do her divers well. Freeman says if she found the right partner it might work, but right now she is focusing on individual diving.

Freeman competed collegiately at the University of Iowa.
