It has not taken long for the football program at Grand View to build a winning tradition. In only five years of varsity football, the Vikings have become perennial contenders in the Midwest League of the Mid-States Football Association.

Grand View has won or shared the Midwest League title the past two years and they enter this season ranked 19th in the NAIA Poll. Grand View coach Mike Woodley says the 25 seniors last year started the program and they set the bar high.

He says things get easier if you win, and you start attracting better players. Several starters are back from last year’s team that finished with a record of 8-3. Woodley says he feels good about their depth, as offensively they are solid at every position.

A tough schedule awaits and Woodley says the bottom line always comes down to turnovers and and takeaways, as you can’t win turning the ball over and you have to be able to make some turnovers on defense.

Grand View opens the season Thursday visiting Drake.
