A sheriff’s deputy was injured in a crash last night in northeast Iowa. The crash happened around 10:15 p.m. along Highway 18 near Luana.

According to a report from the Iowa State Patrol, a marked police car was pulled over on the shoulder of the road with it’s emergency lights activated. Clayton County Sheriff’s Deputy Craig Johnson had pulled over a pickup for a traffic violation.

Another driver, 84-year-old Mary Svendsen of Castalia, was driving on the shoulder of the road and rear-ended the deputy’s vehicle. The report states Svendsen was traveling on the shoulder “at highway speeds.”

Both Deputy Johnson, 27, and Svendsen were taken a hospital in Decorah. There’s no word on their conditions. The Clayton County Sheriff’s office is expected to release more information about the accident later today.
