Authorities in Northwood are investigating the death of a man who was being detained on the suspicion of beating a woman. The Worth County Sheriff’s Department says they responded to a report of a domestic assault in progress at about 11:30 Sunday night at 208 Fourth Street North.

A deputy says he entered and saw a man severely beating a woman. The Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation says additional deputies arrived to subdue the man. While the man was handcuffed, he became unresponsive. He was later pronounced dead. The woman was taken by medical helicopter to St. Mary’s Hospital in Rochester for stab wounds and blunt force injuries.

The Iowa State Medical Examiner’s Office is conducting an autopsy. The names of the victims have not been released, but authorities say they may have been involved in a personal relationship.
