Four U.S. Senators attended a big fundraiser in Washington, D.C. last night (Tuesday) for Republican Governor Terry Branstad, but Texas Senator Ted Cruz — listed as one of the event’s hosts on the invitation — staged his filibuster in the U.S. Senate instead.

The campaign team for Tyler Olson — one of the Democrats who wants to run against Branstad in 2014 — made a web video titled “The Branstad Bunch” to mock the list of GOP hosts for Branstad’s fundraiser. Iowa Democratic Party chairman Scott Brennan held a telephone news conference to criticize the fundraiser, too.

“If Terry Branstad wants to portray himself as a moderate, then hang out with moderates,” Brennan said. “Don’t hang out with the most extreme elements of your party.”

Kentucky Senator Rand Paul, Florida Senator Marco Rubio, Wisconsin Congressman Paul Ryan and Wisconsin Governor Scott Walker were among the “special guests” listed on the invitation to Branstad’s fundraiser, however Rubio was the only one of those four who attended. The others cited scheduling conflicts. A spokesman for Branstad says the governor was pleased to have the support of “Republican difference makers” who agreed to support his D.C. fundraiser.
