Motorcyle rider killed in collision with a Des Moines school bus

September 26, 2013 By O. Kay Henderson

A motorcyclist died this morning after a collision with a Des Moines school bus.  It happened just before seven a.m. when a bus carrying about 20 students to Des Moines North High School drove west into an intersection crossed directly in front of a motorcycle traveling south. Police say the motorcyclist, who was not wearing a helmet, tried to slide under the bus but the maneuver was not successful.

Neither the students nor the driver on board the bus were injured. A few students were interviewed as witnesses. The rest loaded onto another bus headed for school.

It is the third motorcycle fatality in the City of Des Moines in 30 days. According to records from the Iowa DOT, at least 5 motorcyclists have died on Iowa roads this September.  As of last week, there had been 34 motorcycle fatalities in the state.
