The embattled chief of the Iowa Veterans Home has resigned, effective Wednesday.

During a statehouse hearing this spring, advocates for the veterans who live at the home in Marshalltown said some of the residents were afraid of Commandant David Worley. A handful of former employees told legislators Worley was a bully.

Governor Branstad publicly defended Worley in May, but moved to install retired Iowa National Guard Brigadier General Jodi Tymeson as the home’s chief operating officer.  Now, five months later, Branstad has accepted Worley’s resignation and put Tymeson in charge. In a resignation letter the governor’s office released to the media, Worley said he was proud of his work at the home, but had “made the decision to seek other opportunities.”
