Police in Marshalltown continue to investigate a homicide after a body was found late last night inside a Marshalltown home.

Marshalltown Police Chief Mike Tupper says 30-year-old Jeremy A. Gartin of Marshalltown has been charged with first degree murder. A second subject — Max E. Nelson of Marshalltown — faces charges of accessory after the fact, first degree theft and abuse of a corpse. Both suspects are being held in the Marshall County Jail.

Police were called to the residence, they obtained a search warrant and found the body in the basement. Chief Tupper says the name of the victim has not been released because the identification process is ongoing and relatives have not been notified.

The two men in custody have faced criminal charges in the past. The 30-year-old facing murder charges has been charged with felony crimes like burglary and willful injury in the past. The 55-year-old facing first degree theft and other charges in this case was arrested in a Marshalltown bar in May of last year on drug charges.
