Police identify murder victim in Marshalltown

October 4, 2013 By Matt Kelley

Marshalltown Police have released the name of a man found dead inside a home earlier this week. The homicide victim is identified as 59-year-old David James Warnell of Garwin. He was found dead in the basement of a home on North 4th Avenue in Marshalltown.

Police say Warnell was killed Tuesday and an autopsy report shows he was shot in the head. Two Marshalltown men have been charged in the slaying and remain in the Marshall County Jail. Thirty-year-old Jeremy Gartin is charged with first-degree murder and carrying a concealed weapon.

Fifty-five-year-old Max Nelson Jr. is charged with theft, abuse of a corpse and being an accessory. Police have not released many other details about the case.
