Both of Iowa’s U.S. Senators are among a small minority of senators who plan to take a paycheck during the government shut-down.
CNN contacted all 100 U.S. senators and the 435 members of the U.S. House. Republican Chuck Grassley and Democrat Tom Harkin are among just seven senators who plan to accept their salaries during the shut-down. Fifteen senators are not accepting their salaries. Four other senators haven’t decided what to do while the other 43 are either donating their pay to charity or giving it back to the government during the shutdown.
At least two of the four men from Iowa who serve in the U.S. House are not accepting their paychecks. Congressmen Dave Loebsack and Tom Latham have asked House officials to withhold their pay, while Steve King told CNN he hasn’t decided yet and Bruce Braley did not respond to CNN’s question on Friday.
More than 800,000 federal workers, including some of the staff who work for members of congress, have been placed on furlough during the shutdown, meaning they are not being paid.
