Several families in northwest Iowa are trying to get their lives back in order, more than two weeks after six tornadoes ripped through the area, destroying at least 21 farms and damaging dozens of others. Hundreds of volunteers have donated their time and money toward the rebuilding effort.

Today, a Sioux City church is selling pies to raise money to help the tornado victims. David Zirpel is pastor of Redeemer Lutheran Church. “It just so happened that on October 4, we went out and picked 12 bushels of apples. Little did we know, that evening, the tornadoes were going to strike,” Zirpel says.

The church is hoping to sell 200 pies today, with each apple pie priced at $12. All proceeds with go toward the disaster relief effort. The church is also helping a Correctionville family who lost nearly everything in the storm.  “It took the whole roof, even the rafters, and all the windows. It rained in, so everything inside is destroyed,” Zirpel says. “In the spring we’re going to help them rebuild their house.”

Despite the widespread damage from the October 4 tornadoes, no one was seriously injured.
