Voters in Thompson honored Mayor Roger W. Johnson one last time during Tuesday’s election. Johnson, who died over the weekend, finished as the top vote-getter in the city election. His was the only name on the ballot and while 37 write-in votes were cast, no one had more votes than Johnson’s 11.

According to City Clerk Diane Adams, the City Council will decide how to name a new mayor during the city’s next council meeting on Tuesday, November 12th. Adams was unsure whether the council would simply appoint someone to the position or if a citizen would petition that a special election be held.

The new mayor’s term will not start until January 1st. Until that time, Mayor Pro-Tem Jeff Hughes will serve in that position. Johnson, who was 85, had been the mayor of Thompson for the past eight years.
