A Nebraska man died over the weekend after the car he was driving got stuck on railroad tracks and was struck by a train in southwest Iowa.

The Fremont County Sheriff’s Office reports the accident happened just after 3 a.m. Sunday. Officials say a 1997 Chrysler driven by 39-year old Christopher T. Hayes, of Brownville, Nebraska, became lodged on the Burlington Northern-Sante Fe rail line west of the Main Street crossing in Hamburg, and was struck by a northbound BNSF train.

Hayes was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash. The accident remains under investigation, but alcohol is believed to have been a factor.
