West Des Moines police say the body of a woman had been recovered from a vehicle found in a lake following a chase by an officer. Police say an officer noticed a vehicle driving erratically around 3:48 this morning and the officer tried to pull the vehicle over. The vehicle took off and reached speeds of 75 miles an hour before turning down a road that was a dead end.

The officer backed off the chase knowing the driver could not get out because of the dead end. A few minutes later the officer found tire tracks heading in the direction of Crystal Lake on Des Moines Water Works property. The officer saw bubbles in the water that indicated a vehicle had entered the lake.

The vehicle was pulled from the lake and an the woman was found inside. The Polk County Medical Examiner is trying to determine the woman’s identity.
