Cold conditions hamper search for drowning victim in Poweshiek County

December 16, 2013 By Dar Danielson

The search was called off Sunday for a man believed to have drowned in Lake Ponderosa in Poweshiek County. The Poweshiek County Sheriff’s Office says the man was riding an ATV when it went through the ice on the lake near Montezuma Saturday night.

Dive teams from Des Moines and Johnson County were called in to help look for the man who had apparently been going fishing. The search was called off due to the cold temperatures and the thickness of the ice. The man has not been identified and officials have not said when they plan to restart the search for the man’s body.
