Girl found dead in car behind store in Council Bluffs

December 22, 2013 By Matt Kelley

Council Bluffs Police are investigating the death of a 15-year-old girl. Officers were called to a parking lot behind a JC Penney store in Council Bluffs Saturday morning. They found Mireya Mata-Alvarez dead in the back seat of a car.

Investigators say Mireya had been with two girls and five boys — all between 13 and 16 years old — most of the night. Police believe the friends had been driving around and using alcohol and marijuana. Authorities are not releasing many details, but say they do not suspect foul play in the girl’s death.

Police plan to meet with the county attorney to determine if any of the people who were with Mireya could face charges.
