Northwest Iowa firefighter battling field fire when blaze starts at his home

December 27, 2013 By Radio Iowa Contributor

A volunteer firefighter from northwest Iowa was battling a fire in a corn field when his own home caught fire.

Cody Myers is a firefighter for the city of Lawton, which is seven miles east of Sioux City. Three young children were at the home of Cody and Stacy Myers, but were able to escaped unharmed.

When fire crews arrived at the house, it was fully of heavy smoke, but the flames were extinguished in a few minutes. The fire was isolated to the home’s living room, but the entire house suffered extreme heat and smoke damage.

The field fire Myers was fighting when his own home was burned eventually consumed about 30 acres of corn stubble.
