Iowa City landlord found guilty of spying on tenants

January 3, 2014 By Matt Kelley

An Iowa City landlord has been found guilty of spying on his tenants through peepholes.  Sixty-four-year-old Elwyn Miller’s trial took place three months ago, but Johnson County District Court Judge Stephen Gerard waited until this week to issue his ruling — finding Miller guilty of six counts of invasion of privacy.

Police arrested Miller in October 2012 after officers were called to an Iowa City apartment complex where a woman had noticed a peephole next to a vent fan in her bathroom. Five other tenants were eventually identified as victims.

Miller could face up to six years in prison when he’s sentenced on February 10. Several of the tenants have also filed civil suits against Miller seeking unspecified damages.
