Basketball roundup: Drake men lose, UNI men, ISU and Iowa women win

January 9, 2014 By Todd Kimm

Indiana State used a late 14-5 run to take control as the Sycamores beat Drake 77-73 in Des Moines. The Bulldogs fall to 10-5 overall, 1-2 in the Missouri Valley.

The University of Northern Iowa men’s basketball team posted its first road win of the season on Wednesday 80-53 over the Evansville Purple Aces. UNI is 8-7 overall and 2-1 in the MVC.

The 11th ranked Iowa State women overcame a sluggish start and rolled to a 74-48 win over Texas Tech in Ames. Iowa State coach Bill Fennelly says it was a game on paper they should have won, and after that slow start he says they started to play better. Hallie Christopherson led the Cyclones with 22 points as they improve to 14-0.

The Iowa Hawkeye women picked up their first Big Ten victory with a 78-71 win over Minnesota in Iowa City. “A little late coming, but obviously we’re really glad to get this win…this is important for us, after an 0-2 start it was important for us to get a win before we go on the road to Wisconsin this weekend,” Bluder says.

Iowa trailed 35-32 at the half but the Hawks did a better job against Minnesota’s perimeter shooters in the second half. Iowa is now 12-4 overall.
