Iowa Attorney General Tom Miller is encouraging every Iowan who shopped at Target over the holidays to take advantage of an offer from the retail giant. Target stores are offering one year of free credit monitoring to all customers after the recent data breach.  “Iowans have a lot of common sense,” Miller said. “And common sense, I think, tells us that going with this credit card protection program makes sense.”

Hackers broke into the Target database and stole personal information from what could be 70 million people and credit card information from about 40 million. Miller saID breaches of this scale are rare, but smaller ones do occur more often. “We hear about them from time to time in smaller numbers and that’s why we preach so often that people look at their bill and make sure every charge is something they are responsible for,” Miller said.

Iowans who want to register for free credit monitoring can send an email to www.creditmonitoring.target.com by April 23. Miller also recommends every Iowan who used a credit card at Target from November 27th through December 15th to change their pin number.
