A motorist was rescued Wednesday night in southwest Iowa after he started a fire to draw attention to his crash scene. Thirty-eight-year-old Timothy McCollum of Thurman crashed his car in a creek bed under a bridge and the wreckage could not be seen from the road, according to a report from the Iowa State Patrol.

It happened shortly after 7:30 p.m. along 310th Street in Mills County. McCollum was able to free himself from the car, but could not crawl up the embankment due to his injuries. Instead, he started a fire that was seen by a passing driver who found McCollum and called for help.

McCollum was flown to an Omaha hospital where, he was listed in fair condition.
