Winter sports proved hazardous in the Clear Lake area this weekend. The Iowa DNR says 29-year-old Tyler Hall of Twin Lakes Minnesota had finished a run on his snowmobile as part of the Jack Helgren Memorial Race near Clear Lake State Park on Saturday morning when he lost control of his snowmobile.

Hall had completed his run while traveling 75 miles an hour when his snowmobile veered off the route and hit a snow drift. He was thrown from the snowmobile and slid about 100 feet on the ice. Hall suffered a broken collarbone and was taken to Mercy-North Iowa, where he was held overnight for observation and was released from the hospital on Sunday.

The DNR says a pickup truck  broke through the ice on Friday afternoon on Clear Lake and sank.  The driver, 40-year-old Christopher Cash and a passenger, 24-year-old Branden Schare, were  pulling up to their ice fishing shack and were able to get out before the pickup sank.

DNR officer Ben Bergman says recent high winds have hit open water around aerators, causing wave action under the ice that can create soft spots.
