Waterloo hockey coach sets record for wins

January 20, 2014 By Todd Kimm

Waterloo coach P.K. O’ Handley is the all time leader in regular season wins in the United States Hockey League. O’Handley picked up win number 530 on Saturday when the Blackhawks beat the U.S. National team 2-1.

O’Handley began his career with the North Iowa Huskies and says he has enjoyed building relationships with his players over the past two decades. “They’re all special in their own way, and I think you have relationships just like you do in any other facet of life,” O’Handley. He says he is proud of the relationships he has built in his time as a coach.

O’Handley surpassed former Omaha coach Mike Hastings with Saturday’s win. O’Handley says Hastings is a good friend and says he talked to him after setting the record. O’Handley is the only coach in USHL history to coach 1,000 games.
