A 29-year-old Sioux City man who was a suspect in a weekend shooting is now dead, shot by a member of the Sioux City Police SWAT Team when he refused to surrender to police Tuesday. At 3:30 Tuesday morning police started watching Felix William Navarrette at an apartment complex in Sioux City.

Sioux City Police Chief Doug Young says officers saw several females and two small children inside with Navarrette.  “As surveillance continued, the Sioux City SWAT Team began assembling in the area,” Young says. “At 9:20 a.m., all known occupants except Nvarrette had exited the apartment.” The SWAT Team then entered the apartment and tried to take Navarrette into custody. “The suspect fled to a second level of the apartment and was fleeing through a window,” Young says. “As the suspect was escaping, a veteran officer of the Sioux City Police Department and SWAT team member stationed outside fired a single shot, striking the suspect in the chest.”

The police chief says Navarrette then jumped out of the second story window and was taken into custody soon after he hit the ground. Navarrette was taken to a Sioux City hospital, where he died from his injuries. Navarrette was a suspect in the Saturday shooting of two people at a house in Sioux City. One of the shooting victims died.
