Dordt faces key game in stretch run toward conference title

January 31, 2014 By Todd Kimm

The Dordt College men’s basketball team will take a big step toward the Great Plains Athletic Conference regular season title with a victory at Hastings on Saturday. The Defenders sit at the top of the GPAC standings with a 13-1 record. Second place Hastings is 11-2. “This has been a very good year in the G-PAC and Hastings is one of them,” coach Ross Douma says.

Douma says this game will give them a good idea of where they stand in the conference and a victory would give the Defenders a two game lead in the loss column with five to play.

Dortd is 21-2 overall and fifth ranked nationally despite losing five seniors off last year’s team that made it to the quarterfinal round of the NAIA national tournament. “A few things that are hard to measure are your toughness, your chemistry, sometimes the work ethic in practice before the season starts…our two seniors have done a good job of navigating the young kids through those things and helping them understand what it takes to be successful,” Douma says.
