Lake Mills man charged after firing shot at deputies

January 31, 2014 By Radio Iowa Contributor

A rural Lake Mills man is charged with attempted murder after a four-and-a-half hour standoff. A news release from the Worth County Sheriff’s Department says the Winnebago County Sheriff’s Department received a 911 call shortly before noon on Thursday stating that a man residing in rural Lake Mills near the Worth-Winnebago county line, was suicidal and had cut himself.

Two officers responded to the residence to assist when the ambulance arrived, and when they approached the house, the man, identified as 21-year-old Matthew Davis, fired a shot at them, with the officers returning fire after taking cover and calling for backup. Other law enforcement responded to the home and surrounded the area.

No more shots were fired during the standoff, with Davis eventually walking out of the house voluntarily. Davis was taken to a Mason City hospital with self-inflicted knife wounds and was later released and taken to the Worth County Jail, where he was being held on an attempted murder charge.
