The investigation continues into a car versus train accident late last week in Alta that claimed the lives to two small children. The Buena Vista County Sheriff’s Office says four-year-old Chloe Binder and two-year-old Camille Binder, both from Alta, died on Friday at a Sioux Falls hospital, where they had been flown by helicopter after the accident Thursday.

The girls were passengers in a car driven by their brother, 15-year-old Nathaniel Harmes of Storm Lake. It’s believed Harmes didn’t see the westbound Canadian National train when he drove across the tracks on Main Street in Alta. He was treated at the Storm Lake Hospital. The mother of the three children, 37-yearly Heather Binder of Alta, was life-flighted to Sioux Falls Thursday night with serious injuries.

The sheriff’s office says the two girls were in safety seats in the back seat of the car. Harmes had an operator’s permit and was driving legally.
