Iowans need to enjoy the unseasonable warm weather while they can. A massive winter storm is headed for the Hawkeye State which forecasters say will bring heavy snow, strong winds and blizzard conditions to a wide section of Iowa. Meteorologist Rod Donavon, at the National Weather Service, says the rain will start tonight (Wednesday) and change to snow Thursday morning.

“We’re expecting snowfall amounts across much of central and north-central Iowa of four to eight inches and then with the winds picking up, we’re looking at gusts in excess of 50 miles an hour by Thursday afternoon and into Thursday evening,” Donavon says. “We likely going to have significant blowing and drifting snow and likely several hours of blizzard conditions.”

Driving conditions will quickly deteriorate, he says, while some parts of northern Iowa can expect up to ten inches of snow. Check  www.weather.gov for details.
