Josh Carter scored 23 points, added nine rebounds and five assists as top ranked Dubuque Wahlert rolled to an 81-59 victory over Chariton in a class 3A quarterfinal round game at the boys’ state basketball tournament. “It felt real good, we know if we lost tonight we would go home,” Carter says.

Carter says the Golden Eagles were confident heading into the tournament after playing a predominately 4A schedule. “We all feel good about each other, we have great chemistry, it’s just a big family,” Carter says.

T.J. Hockenson led Chariton with 23 points as the Chargers end the season with a record of 21-4. “We knew what we were about to get ourselves into. I’m proud of my guys, we battle…they’re great, they are the favorite. I thought we battled them hard, just a little bit outmanned,”
Chariton coach Ben Schooley says.

It was the Chargers first trip to the state tournament in 42 years.

In the other a Class 3-A quarterfinals: Harlan beat Humboldt 64-44; Central DeWitt beat MOC-Floyd Valley 69-67  and  defending champion Waverly-Shell Rock beat Grinnell  67-58.
