State investigators: man who shot Maquoketa police officer took his own life

April 3, 2014 By Matt Kelley

Investigators say a man who shot a police officer in eastern Iowa Tuesday morning committed suicide a short time later. A release from the Iowa Department of Public Safety indicates 30-year-old Aaron Scott of Wyoming, Iowa died from a self-inflicted gun shot.

Scott was found dead in the wreckage of his pickup in rural Clinton County around 3:30 a.m. Tuesday. Scott had allegedly exchanged gunfire with a police officer in Maquoketa around 3 a.m. after his pickup was spotted by the officer parked the wrong way on a street. Officer chase Scott, but lost him, and he was later found in the pickup.

The Maquoketa officer, Sergeant Brendan Zeimet, was hit in the arm. Zeimet returned fire, hitting Scott in the leg. The investigation found that leg injury to Scott was not life threatening. Zeimet was treated at the hospital and released.
