Four candidates vying for the Iowa Republican Party’s U.S. Senate nomination participated in a forum at Iowa State University last night. The candidates were asked four questions, including one about the federal student loan program. Candidate Sam Clovis is on a sabbatical from his job as a Morningside College professor.

“One of the biggest reasons that colleges cost so much is every time the federal government gets involved in helping students along the way, colleges raise tuition by exactly the amount of help the federal government has given,” said candidate Sam Clovis, a Morningside College professor who is on sabbatical.

The three other Republican candidates who participated in last night’s forum were Joni Ernst, Scott Schaben and Matt Whitaker. Mark Jacobs, the other Republican candidate in the race, cited a scheduling conflict and declined the invitation to appear at the forum, which was sponsored by ISU College Republicans.
