It is a three way race at quarterback at Iowa State as the Cyclones enter the final week of spring drills. Redshirt freshman Joel Lanning has entered the competition that includes both part time starts from last year: Sam Richardson and Grant Rohach.  All three quarterbacks are working toward getting equal snaps, according to Iowa State coach Paul Rhoads, who says Lanning is “certainly in the running.”

Rhoads says with new offensive coordinator Mark Mangino at the helm a young quarterback like Lanning has a better chance to compete for the job. “Everybody starting from day one with the new offense, new learning — yeah I think that’s fair to say — that that probably gives him an opportunity to bring his skills to the table and see how fast he can learn the new mental part of it,” Rhoads says.

Iowa State’s spring game is Saturday.
