What’s billed as the largest student-run celebration in the nation opens today at Iowa State University. VEISHEA is marking more than 90 years on the Ames campus.

ISU student Nick Morton, of Fairfield, is one of the co-chairs for the event, which includes a week of activities, like concerts, comedy and plenty of food. One of the big things this year is the annual parade on Saturday, Morton says, which showcases all the different aspects that make Iowa State unique, with a bigger emphasis this year on floats.

VEISHEA is the acronym for the five ISU colleges that were around when the celebration was started in 1922: Veterinary Medicine, Engineering, Industrial Science, Home Economics and Agriculture. This year’s “Stars Over VEISHEA” production is “Into The Woods,” and other feature acts during the week include a magician, a hypnotist and a regurgitator. “We’ve also got VEISHEA Village, which is another way to showcase Iowa State University’s colleges and organizations all around central campus and that area,” Morton says.

There will be different displays so students and people from the community can go and “just see what’s out there.” The Cyclone spring scrimmage football game is scheduled for Saturday at 2 P.M.
