A young Des Moines man is facing new charges in connection with a fatal traffic crash. The crash occurred on March 29 just after 6:30 p.m. on Des Moines’ southeast side. Police say 21-year-old Jacob Phipps was speeding and lost control of his car, which crossed the center line on the roadway, struck a retaining wall, and then collided head-on with a motorcycle.

The motorcyclist, 51-year-old Michael Harden of Des Moines, was hospitalized. He died from his injuries on Tuesday. Phipps was initially charged with OWI, failure to maintain control, open container and serious injury by vehicle. He’s now facing a charge of vehicular homicide.
