Big finish has Central College baseball team in contention for title

April 29, 2014 By Todd Kimm

A late surge has put the Central College baseball team in the championship hunt heading into the final weekend of the regular season. The Dutch have won 10 of their last 11 games and at 15-9 are in third in the Iowa Conference race, three games behind league leading Buena Vista. “We are going to play at home this weekend with certainly a lot to play for — we’re looking forward to it,” according to Central coach Adam Stevens.

He says experience has been a part of their run. “We have a veteran team this year so our seniors have won a conference title, they’ve been through the ups and downs and are a little more mature and can handle a tough weekend. And we did that and came back and now we are playing really well and hopefully we can carry that through into the post season,” Stevens says.

Stevens says the strength of the team is pitching and defense. He says they have some firepower on offense and that helps, but he says the pitchers have been throwing strikes and the good defense behind them gives them confidence. Central will host Wartburg in a four game series this weekend and the Knights also have a lot to play for. They are currently second in the conference race with a record of 17-7.
