Police in Marshalltown are issuing a warning about rivers after two teenage swimmers struggled to escape the Iowa River Tuesday evening. Marshalltown Police Chief Mike Tupper says first responders got called to an area near a bridge over the Iowa River after a male and a female teen were swimming and ran into trouble with a strong current.

The subjects involved got out of the water okay on their own and were taken to a local hospital with minor injuries. Chief Tupper is urging people not to swim in rivers as the currents and depths can be deceptive. In a news release issued Tuesday night, Tupper stated, “this evening we averted a tragedy.”
