Farmers use bigger machines, technology to gain advantage in good weather

May 15, 2014 By Radio Iowa Contributor

Corn planting moved ahead quickly with some dry weather in the state. Iowa Corn Grower’s President, Roger Zylstra, who farms near Lynnville in Jasper County says farmers know are better prepared to take advantage of good weather when they get it.

Zylstra says they take advantage of all the tools that are available. “We tend to run the technology now that allows us to run more hours in the day,” Zylstra says. “We also have moved to larger equipment so that we can get through it in a timely manner.” Zylstra says for the most part, weather has been better this year for planting.

But he knows not everyone was able to get into the fields and plant last week. Zylstra says he was talking to a friend in Mitchell County who has barely gotten started on planting. Zylstra reminds his fellow producers to alert and safe as the planting season continues.
