The Carroll Police Department is searching for a male suspect who allegedly stabbed a female on the city’s North Main Street at about 7:20 this morning. Authorities say the suspect is a black man with a stocky build. Carroll Police Chief Jeff Cayler says the search zone is in a quadrant of Carroll that’s north of Highway 30.
“I would definitely encourage people to keep their doors locked,” Cayler says. “…I don’t know that the subject’s going to be dangerous at this point, but we want to kind of close all of his avenues of escape…We would definitely like to receive the help from the public. If they would happen to see this gentlemen — he’s approximately 5 (foot) 7 (inches), roughly 150 pounds, kind of a stocky buid, a black male, 27 years of age — please call 911 immediately.”
The victim in this morning’s stabbing was airlifted to a Des Moines hospital and authorities have not been able to interview her. The police chief says a man who was in the home at the time of the incident is considered a “person of interest” in the investigation, but Cayler does not call him a suspect.
With the suspect on the loose and originally reported to be near Carroll Community Schools, the school district was locked down earlier today. Parents were notified this morning with an automated phone message from the superintendent.
“All Carroll Community School buildings are locked down at this time and students will be kept inside,” Superintendent Rob Cordes said. “The district was notified by the Carroll Police Department of a stabbing that took place two blocks from Adams Elementary. The suspect is still at large. This message is being sent as a precautionary measure. All students and staff are safe.”
