Sporadic rain allowed farmers to get a lot of work done in the fields last week. The new U.S.D.A. crop report now shows the corn and bean planting are both ahead of the 5-year average for the first time this season.

The report shows 96-percent of the corn is in the ground, which is 13-percent ahead of last year and 1-percent ahead of the five-year average. Sixty-seven-percent of the corn has emerged — that’s 6 days ahead of last year, but 4 days behind normal.

The beans in the ground doubled last week to 80-percent. That’s 5-percent above the 5-year average.
