River taxi service in Quad Cities wins federal grant

May 29, 2014 By Radio Iowa Contributor

A Quad Cities-based river taxi operation that serves Davenport and Bettendorf is receiving some big bucks from the feds. The three river taxis — called the Channel Cat — ferry people between the Iowa and Illinois shores of the Mississippi River. The federal government has awarded more than $756,000 to be used to build a new terminal in Moline, Illinois.

It will have docking space for three boats. It also will provide a covered waiting area for passengers, an electronic sign for arrival and departure times and greater accessibility for the handicapped. Construction will start soon. The terminal should be ready for use this fall.
