Iowa Hawkeye basketball fans can get their summer fix beginning this week as the Prime Time League in Iowa City begins a new season. The league which features players from Iowa and UNI will be play games on Thursday nights and commissioner Randy Larson says it is designed to be more than just glorified pick up games.

“The coaches are encouraged to use their authority, and as Phil Jackson said ‘I only have one weapon, and that weapon is playing time.’ So, we try to make them play the right way and I think the players really respond to it. Because every players wants the luxury of knowing that when he throws the ball inbounds, it’s not going to be shot before he gets it back,” Larson says. Larson says fans will see some interesting storylines with the Hawkeyes that will involve some position changes.

Larson says they also offer a league for women. The Game Time League begins tonight at the North Liberty Community Center and Larson says there is a lot of excitement surrounding Lisa Bluder’s program. “Not only do they only lose one player out of their top 8, but they’ve got some freshman big people they are going to add up front,” Larson says. And he says they will add the combo guard Witney Jennings, who he says was one of the top players in the country last year.
