Baby thief loses appeal

June 25, 2014 By O. Kay Henderson

The Iowa Court of Appeals has upheld the conviction of a Cedar Rapids man who pled guilty to child stealing.

Johnathan Lindsey Workman was arrested in April of last year, shortly after he tried to steal a baby from a bar in Clear Lake. Witnesses say Workman took the six-month-old out of the arms of a woman who was holding him and claimed the baby was his. Others in the bar prevented Workman from leaving and the baby’s mother eventually pursuaded Workman to give her the baby back.

Workman appealed his felony conviction for child stealing, arguing the judge who sentenced him to 10 years in prison based that decision partly on assault charges filed in the case that had been dismissed. The Court of Appeals rejected that argument and Workman remains behind bars.
